Stone Design

Every design has to have a planning. This is my Necklace design look.I was place stone on an A3 paper and arrange them nicely to form a necklace shape. This design will give me an idea of how will my final necklace will look like.

This is the final design. for now i will call it a bracelet. Because i did not have enough time to make a Necklace. This is a bottom piece of the Necklace that can be worn as a bracelet.

This is a new drawing i draw after seeing how my  final design will look like. The drawing looks slightly different from my first drawing.

Every design comes with planning and some of our design process was to make a prototype and see how our design will look like.  My prototype is made put of paper and box. The cart box represent brass and the white paper represent silver.

The drawing might be different from the final design. I had to make some changes as i did not like how it was looking. The only change i did was to add 6 mm rectangle bar into my square design to create a Triangle inside a square.

I made a Drawing that looks like this one. but I did not like it. I had to go back and do my research and find a beautiful contrast picture on Pinterest . Lucky me, I found a simple picture, that has a simple design that I like. That is when i got the inspiration to draw this shape bracelet and incorporate it with my idea. I also change my Pendant design to heptagon made of brass.

I had this idea to design a bracelet with form and colour. But first the has to be a drawing to bring my idea to life. That is when i draw a bracelet with two shapes, circle and square. But i do not know what material to use. I was thinking of making square shape with brass and circle with silver, to have a colour contrast. A bracelet has to have a pendant, My design pendant  is a square shape, inside the will be a circle.

Ashante charm bracelet

Durban University of Technology 2nd year jewellery student got to be part of Material Encounter Exhibition at Wits Museum and got the opportunity to  display their Ashante charm bracelet. I was part of those student that got the opportunity to display their work. Thanks to our Lecture Ann-Marie for taking them to the museum and representing us.

This Ashante bracelet was achieved by hitting the metal with a hammer  creating a flat rings. After creating flat ring I linked them together to form a bracelet. Last week i was busy with casting, during the casting process i made spirals and my crocodile eating a lag.
 

Circumscribe (Personal Interpretation)

 Contrast is the difference between two object, even emotions can be seen as contrast. Happiness can contrast to anger or frustration, love is contrast to hate. Contrast makes two close objects to be distinguishable. To create clarity between objects. Black and white are good examples of contrast, they are always put together or go along together but differ in colour when printing a black and white paper or watching black and white television. The word contrast means to stand against. When a tall, muscular man stand against a short, slim women, they are contrast to one another 

My design will focus of form, colour and texture. Two shapes will have different texture, colour and form. The design will be a necklace with two shape, Circle and Square. The circle will have a smooth texture while square will have a rough texture. For contrast in colour. Silver metal for circle and brass for square 

Crocodile Proverb

Do not insult the crocodile while your legs are inside the water. The proverb means that you should not not insult other people while you are still with them. You should respect everyone because it is dangerous to insult other people because you might get hurt. Never disrespect others

I made a prototype of a Crocodile with wax. To see how it will look like as a finish piece. The wax Crocodile is flooting in the river while the head is out. The object in his mouth is a human leg. As the Proverb says Do not insult the crocodile while your legs are in the water

Contrast/ Brief

The picture above shows a black and white with different shapes, Circle, Square  and triangle. This kind picture show a definite example of Contrast. We were given a project to make any piece of jewellery we like. The jewellery  piece we are going to make has to have a contrast.

Ring, Pendant and Necklace made with clay

This is the final stage, working with clay. The ceramics before firing they were dusty and didn't have beautiful color. Like the blue pots above it was light blue before firing

. After firing they came out beautiful and wearable.

First week not knowing how to work with clay I had to google, doing research about different kinds of shells to use for rings, pendants, and pots impressions. After seeing seashells, I started being fascinated about their forms and look. I loved their shapes; I tested them, they give me this beautiful impression on my clay. I started making rings, pendants, and pots with impressions of seashells with some little added details of my own. This made my work to be easy and beautiful. The challenging part was forming rings with clay and be wearable. Some part of working with clay was enjoying mostly the part where the clay form look like a ring and fits my finger. That’s the most exciting moment ever, knowing that finally it done. Making pendent and pots was fun because they are times where I would be in the moment and enjoying making pendent. Rubbing the clay, feeling the softness makes me feel at ease.

Triple pavé butterfly diamond small ring is made by Graff, a jewellery house that started by Laurence Graff  60 years ago at the age of 18 in London. Laurence was fascinated with diamond from a young age. Now Graff is one of the most biggest jewellery houses in the world having expensive precious stones in their jewellery house

Quatre Classique ring 

The Quatre Classique large ring has 29 round diamont, made with 18k yellow, pink  and white gold also added brown PVD. The Quatre Classique ring is one of the collectons from Boucheron from 2004. And top selling ring till today.

Boucheron is a jewellery house started by Frédéric Boucheron in 1858  in a place call place Vendôme in France. They launched so many expensive jewellery with  beautiful precious stones. like Quatre Classique large that is designed with the inspiration from cobblestones.

Macri Eternelle Bracelet

 The Macri Eternelle, pink gold 750/1000 bracelet with 9 round brilliant cut diamond. The bracelet was designed for Gianmaria for his daughter Maria Cristina in the 80s , Now is one of the most selling jewellery from the Buccellati collection. The jewellery made by Buccellati are inspiration of flowers, leaves and shell design.

Buccellati company has been running for many years. Owned by Mario Baccellati born in 1891 , He started working for Beltrami and Besnati goldsmith during world war and after the world war in 1919 he decided to continue with the business and named it Buccellati. Now is one of the top jewellery Houses

The above picture shows all my Ceramic that i was busy with during the past weeks. The pinch bowl, where white, Pendants and rings  had the origin clay color. After coming out of fire I coloured my Ceramics with white, blue, green and yellow to give them a beautiful. when they got dry i used sand paper to smooth the surface and scratch off little paint to make them look old. Now they are waiting for glazing

Van cleef and Arpels is a jewellery comapny started in 1906 by Estelle Arpels  and Alfred Van Cleef in 22 place Vendôme in Paris. The couples shared the same love for precious stones.

The Van Cleef and Arpels are well known for getting their inspiration from nature. Making jewellery with inspiration from insects and flowers. The jewellery company designed a ring called Lucky Spring they got their from ladybug and floral Motifs.

    Serpenti Ring

Bulgary/Bvlgary is a jewellery Campny started in 1884 by  Sotirio Bulgari. He was a great silversmith with the way he design and modify jewellery. The bulgary Campany is well known for making expensive and unique rings, watches, necklace and bracelets. One of the Bulgary signature ring is the Serpenti ring. The design is so unique that people know that Serpenti Ring is made by Bulgary.

Clay Pendant 

The picture above is a Pendants made with clay. The clay has different impressions of sea shells. Using available sea shells  in class to pick from  and other different other shell that where available.Still using my previous clay pots as my reference found in Pinterest . The impression of sea shell made my clay Pendants to look nice.

After woking with clay and making Pendants the clay is still wet. The still have to stay little bit before going for firing to dry them.

  The inspiration i got to design the shell posts comes from sea shells on Pinterest. This is a final picture of the clays I was busy with But only did 2.Then the next day I worked on the third one.The light white shell is ready to go for bisque fire.Because it was the first clay pots I worked on, it had enough time to dry. The other two needs to wait some days until they turn white like the one on the top left to be ready to put in the fire.

 Took me 3 days to finish designing this shells with clay. First day i didn't know how to work with clay, our lecture had to demonstrate to us how to work with clay. the white one is drying up and the second one still wet.
